Fun Facts

Running is a big part of my life. I have only been running for a few years but it all started with 9 months of training which led to a successful marathon finish. I love trail running and hope one day to win an trail ultramarathon (anything race longer than a marathon).
Photography is another chunk of my life. Nature, high speed, you name it, I like to photograph it. Next on my list is to learn piano.
Oh, and I can solve a Rubik's cube in one minute!

About Me

I grew up in northern Kentucky and got my undergraduate degree in physics from Eastern Kentucky University with a GPA of 3.93. I immediately moved to Baltimore for graduate school at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County where I recently graduated with a Ph.D. in physics. During my Ph.D. research I got be hands-on, use million-dollar tools, presented my work at several international conferences, and published my work in reputable scientific journals.

Experience

I started tutoring physics students in an open session immediately after I passed my first undergraduate physics courses. Additionally I was a teaching assistant for a class called Inquiry Physics for Teachers intended for education majors. When I entered graduate school I was a teaching assistant for an honors physics class and tutored in an open session 2-3 hours per week for 2 years. Finally, I have mentored 4 graduate students in my graduate research field.

Approach

I believe people learn best by doing and thinking for themselves. My approach has always been to ask questions. Since solving problems is the students' demonstration of core concepts, I focus on the core concepts. We break each problem down together until we find the edge of his/her knowledge, then build a bridge of concepts to the solution. In the end, the students aren't learning how to solve just one set of a problems. They develop problem solving techniques applicable to many situations.
